Tools for the Journey
The 50% Journey is built on the idea that rewriting your future is a skill — and like any skill, it develops through practice. These resources support the four-step framework from the book.
Goal Setting Methods
The book outlines seven approaches to finding your next 90-day goal. Use whichever fits your starting point:
- Nexus Method — Find where your Competence, Passion, and Contribution overlap
- Begin From the End — Work backward from press releases, acceptance speeches, or your obituary
- Survey Method — Tap coworkers, friends, and family for what they see in you
- Reverse Engineering — Trace your best days, ideal future, and most fulfilled moments
- Storyline Method — Write your life as memoir, science fiction, or from your antagonist's view
- The "Why Not?" Method — Revisit dismissed dreams and examine the barriers honestly
- Experimental Method — Run a 90-day trial, try the opposite of your default, or commit to one thing fully
Guardrail Setting Methods
Goals without guardrails get abandoned. These methods help you identify the values that need protecting during your sprint:
- One Word Method — Use Five Why's, Non-Negotiables, or Reductive stripping to find your core value
- Aspiration Method — Study your mentors, heroes, and anti-heroes for what you admire and reject
- Begin From the End — Write a legacy letter, choose three tombstone words, or get advice from your future self
- Self Connection Method — Get present through breath, name your feelings, trace them to unmet needs
- Elimination Method — Sacrifice, Live Without, and Universality to test what's genuinely essential
